LymphaTouch® in Paignton, Torbay for Scar, Swelling & Tissue Recovery

LymphaTouch® is a specialist treatment technology used at Physiotherapy Torbay to complement scar therapy, Women’s Health physiotherapy and musculoskeletal and post operative rehabilitation. Our LymphaTouch treatment in Paignton, Torbay uses controlled negative pressure to gently lift, decompress and mobilise tight or adhered soft tissues, helping support people experiencing scar tightness, pinning, restricted movement, swelling, pain or discomfort as part of a personalised treatment plan.

Unlike traditional massage techniques that push downward on the skin, this upward lifting action stretches the underlying fascia and improves blood and lymphatic circulation around the scar site.

What Is a LymphaTouch® Medical Device?

The LymphaTouch® device is a therapeutic device that applies controlled negative pressure through a treatment head placed against the skin.

Rather than simply pressing down into sensitive tissues, negative pressure gently lifts the skin and underlying tissue. The LymphaTouch® medical device can also provide mechanical vibration as part of treatment.

At Physiotherapy Torbay, LymphaTouch® is not treated as a standalone solution for every condition. It can be incorporated into a wider physiotherapy or scar management programme where Sarah considers it appropriate following assessment.

This means treatment can combine specialist medical technology with clinical assessment, manual therapy, movement advice and rehabilitation rather than focusing solely on the equipment itself.

What Is LymphaTouch® Good For?

LymphaTouch® may be useful where tissue mobility, swelling or scar-related restriction is affecting comfort or movement.

It can be used to support treatment for:

  • C-section, oncology and other surgical scars
  • Scar tightness, pulling, pinned in or reduced mobility
  • Areas where a scar feels restricted against deeper tissues
  • Localised swelling and fluid movement
  • Sensitivity, pain or discomfort around healed scar tissue
  • Postnatal abdominal and C-section recovery
  • Tissue restriction affecting normal movement
  • Rehabilitation where swelling or restricted soft tissue is contributing to symptoms

For scar treatment, the aim is not to make a scar disappear. Treatment instead focuses on improving how the scar and surrounding tissues feel and move, where this is clinically appropriate. This can often improve the appearance of the scar.

How Does LymphaTouch® Negative Pressure Therapy Work?

LymphaTouch® uses controlled negative pressure and specialist technology to support tissue mobility, fluid movement and scar recovery. The device offers several treatment functions and potential benefits:

  • Negative Pressure LiftThe device uses specialised cups to create a vacuum effect that pulls the skin and scar tissue upwards.
  • Pulsed or Continuous ModesSarah can set the device to pulse (lifting and releasing the tissue rhythmically) to flush fluids and stimulate the area without overstressing delicate scar tissue, or use continuous suction for a deeper hold.
  • Mechanical VibrationsIntegrated mechanical vibration stimulates micro-circulation, boosts blood flow and promotes lymphatic drainage to clear out trapped fluids and reduce post-surgical swelling.
  • Reduces AdhesionsHelps free up 'stuck down' or tethered scars that create a shelf or pulling sensation.
  • Softens TissuesHelps break down thick, stiff collagen fibres and radiation fibrosis to make the scar flatter and more pliable.
  • Relieves DiscomfortEases localised pain, tight pulling and sensory deficits around the incision area.

How LymphaTouch® Supports Scar Therapy & Rehabilitation

Gentle Tissue Mobilisation

The negative pressure created by the LymphaTouch® device gently lifts the skin and underlying tissues. This can be useful when treating areas that feel tight, tethered or uncomfortable, particularly around healed scars.

Support for Fluid Movement

LymphaTouch® can be used as part of treatment where swelling is present. Its controlled negative pressure encourages fluid movement through the tissues and can be incorporated into treatment designed to support lymphatic drainage.

Scar Mobility & Comfort

Scar tissue can sometimes feel tight, sensitive or restricted even after the wound itself has healed. LymphaTouch® may be combined with hands-on scar therapy to work on mobility around the scar and surrounding tissues.

Treatment is always adapted to the individual rather than following a fixed machine-based protocol.

LymphaTouch® for C-Section & Postnatal Recovery

LymphaTouch® is particularly relevant to Sarah’s work in Women’s Health, scar therapy and postnatal rehabilitation.

Following a C-section, some women experience pulling, tightness, sensitivity or reduced movement around the scar and abdominal tissues. Once the scar has healed sufficiently for treatment, Sarah can assess how the scar itself and surrounding tissues are moving before deciding whether LymphaTouch® could be a suitable addition to treatment.

Scar therapy can also sit alongside a broader postnatal assessment where appropriate, including consideration of abdominal recovery, pelvic health and return to normal activity.

What to Expect From LymphaTouch® Treatment

Initial Clinical Assessment

Sarah will first discuss your symptoms, relevant medical and surgical history, what you are hoping to improve and short and longer term goals. The scar, swelling, mobility and affected tissues can then be assessed to determine whether LymphaTouch® is appropriate.

Personalised Treatment

If LymphaTouch® is suitable, the treatment settings and technique are adapted according to the area being treated and your comfort. It may be combined with manual scar therapy, the Winback 3TX and physiotherapy rehabilitation exercises where appropriate.

Advice for Ongoing Recovery

Where relevant, you may also receive advice on movement, scar care and exercises to continue between appointments. The aim is to support your wider recovery rather than relying solely on treatment with the LymphaTouch® device.

When LymphaTouch® May Not Be Appropriate

LymphaTouch® treatment needs to be considered in the context of your overall health and stage of recovery.

Scar treatment should not be carried out over an open or infected wound. If a surgical wound is becoming increasingly red, swollen or painful, is opening, or has unusual discharge, seek medical advice from your GP, consultant, nurse or another appropriate healthcare professional before arranging scar therapy.

If you are unsure whether your scar or symptoms are ready for treatment, Sarah can discuss suitability as part of your assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does LymphaTouch® Treatment Hurt?

LymphaTouch® uses controlled negative pressure rather than simply applying forceful pressure into the tissues. Treatment can be adjusted according to the area being treated and your comfort. If you have a sensitive scar or tender tissues, this can be considered when selecting an appropriate treatment pressure approach.

Can LymphaTouch® Treat a C-Section Scar?

LymphaTouch® can be incorporated into treatment for a healed C-section scar where clinically appropriate. Sarah can assess the scar and surrounding tissues for tightness, sensitivity and restriction before deciding which scar therapy techniques are suitable for your recovery.

Can LymphaTouch® Help With Swelling?

LymphaTouch® can be used to support fluid movement and lymphatic drainage as part of an appropriate treatment plan. Because swelling can have different causes, Sarah will assess your symptoms and relevant history before deciding whether LymphaTouch® treatment is suitable.

Is LymphaTouch® Used on Its Own?

No. At Physiotherapy Torbay, LymphaTouch® complements manual therapy, scar treatment, Women’s Health physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Your treatment is based on your individual assessment and treatment needs rather than just relying solely on the device.

How Many LymphaTouch® Sessions Will I Need?

There is no fixed number of LymphaTouch® sessions that is appropriate for everyone. The amount of treatment required will depend on your individual presentation, such as your symptoms, scar and tissue restrictions, swelling, type of scar (hypotrophic, hypertrophic or keloid), age of scar and response to treatment. Sarah can discuss an appropriate approach after assessing you.

Arrange Your LymphaTouch® Assessment in Paignton

If a scar feels tight, restricted, painful or uncomfortable, or swelling is affecting your recovery, an assessment can help establish what may be contributing to your symptoms. Sarah can determine whether LymphaTouch® should form part of your physiotherapy or scar therapy plan and explain the most appropriate next steps for your individual recovery.
