What Is WINBACK® BACK 3 TX TECAR Therapy?
WINBACK® BACK 3 TX is a TECAR therapy system that complements clinical treatment.
The technology creates a controlled thermal effect within deeper tissues. At Physiotherapy Torbay, it can be incorporated into treatment to support tissue mobility, circulation and recovery where Sarah considers it appropriate following an assessment.
The WINBACK® device is not used as a one-size-fits-all treatment. It may be combined with manual scar therapy and physiotherapy rehabilitation depending on the problem being treated.
What Is WINBACK® TECAR Therapy Used For?
WINBACK® TECAR therapy may be incorporated into treatment where scar tissue or surrounding tissues feel tight, restricted, uncomfortable, painful or have altered sensation.
It can be used to support treatment for:
- C-section and other healed oncology and surgical scars
- Deep scar adhesions and restricted tissue movement
- Tightness or pulling around a scar
- Areas that feel stiff or “stuck”
- Localised swelling around recovering tissues
- Persistent discomfort associated with healed scar tissue
- Burning, numbness or sensitivity around a scar
- Postnatal abdominal and C-section rehabilitation
The purpose of scar therapy is not to remove a scar. Treatment focuses on improving the mobility, comfort and function of the scar and surrounding tissues where clinically appropriate. This can often improve the look of the scar too.
How Does WINBACK® BACK 3 TX Technology Work?
The WINBACK® BACK 3 TX uses multi-frequency radiofrequency energy combined with specialised electrical currents (TECAR, Hi-TENS and Hi-EMS). Sarah can use these technologies alongside hands-on scar therapy to support tissue mobility, manage discomfort and work on areas affected by scar tightness or fascial adhesions.
TECAR Energy (High-Frequency Current)
TECAR operates between 300 kHz and 1 MHz, creating controlled heating within the tissues (diathermy). This involves the movement of ions within the tissues and is used to stimulate local circulation and cellular activity.
Capacitive (CET) and Resistive (RET) Modes
The WINBACK® system offers different treatment modes depending on the tissues being targeted:
- CET Mode: Targets more superficial soft tissues and skin layers to support local circulation.
- RET Mode: Targets deeper, denser tissues, including areas affected by fibrosis or scar-related restriction.
- MIX Mode: Combines capacitive and resistive approaches to work with different tissue depths during treatment.
Hi-TENS and Hi-EMS Currents
Hi-TENS and Hi-EMS use low- and medium-frequency electrical currents for different treatment purposes.
Hi-TENS may be used to help manage pain and sensitivity, while Hi-EMS provides electrical muscle stimulation that can support muscle activation and rehabilitation.
Sarah selects the appropriate treatment settings according to the scar, surrounding tissues and individual assessment.
How WINBACK® May Help With Scars and Adhesions
WINBACK® BACK 3 TX may be used alongside manual scar therapy to address areas of tightness, restriction and discomfort.
Supporting Fibrotic Tissue Mobility
The controlled thermal effect of TECAR therapy may help improve tissue flexibility and support treatment of stiff or fibrotic areas around a healed scar.
Working on Scar Adhesions
Sarah can combine WINBACK® treatment with manual massage and scar mobilisation techniques to work on areas where the scar feels attached to underlying muscle or fascia.
The aim is to improve tissue glide and mobility, particularly where adhesions contribute to pulling, tightness or restricted movement.
Managing Pain and Sensitivity
WINBACK® incorporates technologies that may help manage localised pain and discomfort around healed scar tissue.
This can be particularly relevant where a scar remains sensitive, uncomfortable or restricted during everyday movement.
How WINBACK® May Support Scar Recovery
Supporting Deep Tissue Mobility
The thermal effect produced during WINBACK® treatment is used to support the elasticity of the tissues. This can be particularly relevant where deeper layers around a healed scar feel adhered, stiff, restricted or painful.
Reducing Tightness & Pulling
Restricted scar tissue can sometimes create a pulling sensation during movement. Treatment may be used alongside manual scar techniques to encourage improved glide between the scar and surrounding tissues.
Supporting Circulation & Swelling
WINBACK® therapy is also used to stimulate local microcirculation and cellular activity. This can form part of treatment where swelling or fluid around recovering tissues is contributing to discomfort or restriction.
Addressing Ongoing Discomfort
Some healed scars remain sensitive or are associated with burning, numbness or persistent discomfort. Where appropriate, WINBACK® may be incorporated into a wider scar treatment plan aimed at improving comfort and tissue mobility.
WINBACK® for C-Section Scar Treatment
C-section scars can sometimes remain tight or tethered, or feel ‘pinned in’, after the incision itself has healed. Some women also notice pulling, sensitivity, restricted movement generally (not just in the abdomen) or a visible shelf, usually above the scar.
Sarah can assess the scar and surrounding abdominal tissues to identify areas of restriction. Where appropriate, WINBACK® BACK 3 TX may then be combined with hands-on scar therapy to work on deeper adhesions, tissue mobility and local swelling.
Treatment can also form part of broader Women’s Health physiotherapy or postnatal rehabilitation when other symptoms need to be considered alongside the scar.
Ask About WINBACK® Treatment
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Clinical Assessment
Sarah will discuss your symptoms, relevant medical or surgical history and how the affected area feels during everyday movement, as well as short- and longer-term treatment goals.
The scar, surrounding tissues and movement can then be assessed. This is not just about the scar itself; it is a full-body assessment of how the scar is affecting you and your mobility.
Tailored Treatment
If WINBACK® TECAR therapy is suitable, Sarah will select the treatment approach according to the tissues involved and your individual presentation. Other physiotherapy or scar therapy techniques may be used during the same treatment plan.
Ongoing Recovery Advice
Where relevant, Sarah may provide advice on scar care, useful products to aid scar rehabilitation, movement and exercises to support your recovery between appointments.
When Scar Treatment Should Wait
WINBACK® treatment is considered according to your stage of healing and overall health.
A scar needs to be fully healed with no scabbing remaining, which is normally around six weeks. Treatment should not be performed over an open or infected wound.
If your scar or wound is becoming increasingly red, swollen or painful, is opening, or has unusual discharge, seek advice from your GP, consultant, nurse or another appropriate healthcare professional before arranging scar therapy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WINBACK® TECAR Therapy Feel Hot?
WINBACK® treatment uses a controlled thermal effect within the tissues. Sarah will tailor the treatment according to the area being treated and your comfort rather than using the same approach for every person.
Can WINBACK® Be Used on a C-Section Scar?
Yes, WINBACK® may be incorporated into treatment for a suitably healed C-section scar. Sarah will assess the scar and surrounding tissues first to determine whether TECAR therapy is appropriate.
Can It Help With a C-Section Shelf?
WINBACK® can be used as part of scar therapy where restricted tissues and localised swelling are contributing to the appearance or feel of a C-section shelf. Individual results vary, and treatment suitability is determined following assessment.
Is WINBACK® Used Without Hands-on Treatment?
No. At Physiotherapy Torbay, the device complements manual scar therapy and physiotherapy rehabilitation rather than replacing clinical assessment and hands-on treatment.
How Many WINBACK® Sessions Will I Need?
There is no standard number of sessions for everyone. The recommended approach depends on factors including your symptoms, scar mobility (adhesions, anchoring), stage of recovery, age of the scar, type of scar (hypotrophic, hypertrophic or keloid) and response to treatment.
Arrange Your WINBACK® Assessment in Paignton
If a healed scar feels tight, tethered, painful, has altered sensation, is ‘lumpy’ or uncomfortable, an assessment can help identify whether deeper tissue restriction may be contributing to your symptoms.
Sarah can assess the area and explain whether WINBACK® BACK 3 TX TECAR therapy could form part of your personalised physiotherapy and scar treatment plan.
